OPGW 48F or 288F: splice productivity moves the price more than the cable
Between a 48-fibre and a 288-fibre configuration, the biggest variable is not material. It is the number of crew days you have to pay for.
Four days against one
A crew closes a 48-fibre OPGW splice in one working day. The same point at 288 fibres takes around four. It is not proportional to fibre count, but it is not free either: 288 fusions, 288 measurements and far more complex tray management inside the same closure.
Multiplied by the number of points
If the route has twenty splice points, the gap is sixty crew days. In the Andes, where every day includes transfer, safety briefing and a weather-constrained working window, those sixty days weigh more than the cable premium.
The hour lost every day
High-altitude sites lose roughly one hour a day between safety briefing, transfer to the work front and meals. With a 40 km/h site speed limit, a front thirty kilometres from camp means forty-five minutes each way. None of that appears in a bill of materials, and it defines the schedule.
What you cannot get in 288F
Rodent-resistant OPGW is not available at 288 fibres. Down-leads, tails and branch points require separate rodent-resistant standard fibre, typically 48 fibres, with a minimum of around 300 metres for a down-lead to a central rack. This material is almost never in the original BOM.
Closures are not the same either
A standard two-in, two-out closure will not do at a branch point. Multiport closures are required, and in the 288-fibre range the manufacturer field narrows considerably. It is worth verifying the published catalogue capacity before assuming a supplier can deliver.
How to price it
On unit rates: price per metre of cable, price per splice point by fibre count, and price per mobilised crew day. When the reel plan finally fixes the real number of points, the figure adjusts itself without argument.
